DIET or EXERCISE - What's more important?
This is a question that comes up a lot among people who are new to bodybuilding. Now if you really stop and think about it, I think the answer becomes quite obvious. But it's alway nice to hear an "Experts" opinion on the question.
In fact, at this years Arnold Classic Bodybuilding & Fitness Expo I attended the "Ask Arnold" seminar and one of the seminar attendees asked Arnold that exact question and he gave a great answer...
Arnold's reply was:
Look at it this way, when it comes to living what do you think is more important; food or water?
After all, if you stopped consuming one or the other you wouldn't live very long.
There are all kinds of other comparisons we could make here as well:
What's more important to running a car; gas or oil?
What's more important for growing plants; water or sunshine?
What's more important for "satisfaction"; length or girth?
I think you get the idea...
Obviously BOTH "Diet" AND "Exercise" are critically important to achieving bodybuilding success.
However, from a practical point of view I believe that EXERCISE is slightly more important. I mean you gotta eat, so regardless if you exercise or not you are still going to eat on a regular basis or else you wouldn't be alive and watching this video right now.
But you don't have to exercise. So for someone who is brand new to the whole bodybuilding and fitness game I recommend that the first thing they focus on is working out on a regular basis.
A basic 3 day per week weight training workout program is a great place to start. Once someone gets the momentum going from working out on a regular basis they'll automatically start looking for ways to maximize their performance through better nutrition choices.
So my advice for newbies is to start with exercise. Initially focus all your attention and energy on that component of our bodybuilding routine. And the rest will follow in suit. There's no need to overwhelm yourself with too much too soon.
I hate it when I see someone who isn't even working out, and yet is afraid to start because they think blow things out of proportion thinking they're going to need to follow a strict diet, take expensive supplements, and live like a monk in a temple.
Just take things one step and a time, and the first step is actually getting your ass into the gym. Don't bog yourself down with anything more than that. Once the exercise component is in place, the other stuff will start to fall into place as well.
I mean you wouldn't take a kindergarten student and try to get them started with algebra, chemistry and physics right off the bat. Just keep it simple, let's start by learning the alphabet and adding up 1 + 1, all the rest will follow in due time.
