          Can Children Eat Whey Protein?

          Can Children Eat Whey Protein?

          Mar 28, 2011 | By Carol Ochs

Whey protein is safe for many children, as long as it's consumed in modest amounts. Though whey protein is touted in body-builder ads as a supplement that can help you build muscle more quickly, most children are probably already getting some whey protein in their diets. Whey is one of the two proteins than can be found in a glass of milk.

          Definition

The American Dairy Products Institute explains that whey is the watery part of milk that remains after it coagulates, usually when cheese and cottage cheese are being made. It's rich in lactose, vitamins, minerals and whey proteins. According to MayoClinic.com, whey proteins are "highly digestible" and can be found as a fat-replacer in low-fat ice cream and in milk replacement products, bread and infant formula. Whey protein is also a popular dietary supplement.

          Medical and Nutritional Uses

Whey protein may be used for both medical and nutritional reasons. MayoClinic.com gives whey protein an "A" as a nutritional supplement for people who need additional protein in their diet. It finds that hydrolysed whey protein formula might also be helpful in preventing some allergies. The U.S. National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health report that whey protein has been tested in children as a means to moderate the immune response in those with atopic asthma and as a means of treating children with a rapidly progressing HIV infection. In addition, it may be used in infant formula for treatment of eczema.

          Amounts

As with any dietary supplement, it's always best to check with your pediatrician about your children's individual needs before giving them whey protein. According to MayoClinic.com, kids may be able to take 10 grams of whey protein twice a day for a month to treat allergies. Children may take up to 50 grams of whey protein in a single dose, depending on their weight, when it's being used as an appetite suppressant. A doctor also may recommend the protein as a supplement for burns, with dosing based on the child's weight.

          Warnings

If your child is allergic or hypersensitive to milk and milk products, avoid using whey protein. It could produce symptoms such as throat itching, facial swelling, vomiting, diarrhea or colic. MayoClinic.com also warns that you should use whey protein cautiously if your child is on any medications. Whey proteins have the potential to alter the level of those drugs in the blood. In addition, the protein can lower blood sugar levels, increase the risk of bleeding or cause low blood pressure. Excessive amounts of whey protein over an extended period of time could cause kidney damage or bone loss.

Ligt natuurlijk aan de hoeveelheid maar dat is met whey maar net hetzelfde.
